I do think it's a bit stingy to backlight only some of the keys, but that is the only downside I can think of really. I am very glad I went for a mechanical keyboard over another membrane type one, and have no regrets. Overall I would have to say that despite being fairly expensive for a keyboard, it is worth the money. I am able to touch type at a fairly high rate, and with this I can do it very much faster than I could with the Logitech it replaced.

It reacts that bit quicker, but certainly the feel is a lot better than my old keyboard. One thing to note about this keyboard is it has quite a thick base, so it raises the keys up off the desk a bit more than others.Īs for whether it helps with gaming, I have not tried it out for that extensively yet, but so far I would say a qualified yes. It exudes a feeling of solidity and high quality, and is quite weighty at just over a kilo, so it doesn't slide about on the desk easily. It is quite purposeful and chunky looking, and doesn't look tacky. I was not keen on gaming keyboards that looked like they were ripped off from the set of a 70's sci fi movie, and luckily this does not fall into that category. It's supplied with a tool for removing the key caps and a couple of spare caps.

It features a windows key lockout, which is extremely useful for gaming. The keyboard features partial red backlighting (just of the common keys used in gaming) which can be turned off and varied in brightness, and the F1-F12 keys double as media keys and control the backlighting. I slightly preferred the looks of this one :) Other keyboards which I considered were the Qpad MK-50 and the SteelSeries 6GV2 which are available at about the same price as this one, and also fall into the mechanical keyboard with no frills category.

This one has the full extended layout with full numpad. I also did not want to skimp on keys (it has become common to offer mechanical keyboards in a space saver format with a reduced number of keys to keep costs down).

The Coolermaster Storm QuickFire Pro obviously falls into the latter category. I didn't want to spend a fortune, so for my budget it came down to a choice between a full featured but membrane based gaming keyboard (one with full multicoloured illumination, macro keys, perhaps even an LCD screen) or a more basic mechanical keyboard.

The other common witch variants, Black, Blue and Brown have different characteristics to suit different preferences and uses. While much louder than membrane keyboards, they are quieter than some of the other variants (Blues being the "click" switches are the loudest). The Red switches have a linear force required to actuate them, and a low resistance (in other words, they are li ght to press). This particular model uses Cherry MX Red switches. The main thing is they offer a completely different, more positive feel, and you don't need to bottom out the keys for a key stroke to be registered. Mechanical switch keyboards are a lot more expensive than their rubber dome/membrane switch counterparts, but offer a few advantages to the gamer, and heavy duty keyboard users in general. Gaming keyboards can largely be split into ones that use mechanical key switches, and those that use other technologies (mainly membrane switches). I needed a replacement keyboard to replace a ropey six year old Logitech model, and being a casual gamer, decided to look into gaming keyboards.
